McClain - Harry
Source: Waynetown Despatch 3 April 1908
The case of George Harrod, the Big Four
operator for killing of Harry McClain, at Crawfordsville on Thanksgiving eve
last year came to a close Thursday evening of last week and the jury was out
all night bringing in a verdict Friday morning that they found him not guilty.
The first ballot of the jury 7 voted for conviction but finally these came over
and Harrod was set free. It was rather a peculiar case, but the 12 men who
decided it were more able to judge its merits than those who only heard it off
hand or read of it through the papers. Yet, when one looks back over the two
murder tragedies in this county the past few months and notes the penalties
inflicted, the thought is almost excusable that human life is growing mighty
cheap. - kbz
