James McCARTY, son of Edward and Joanna McCarty, was born May 16, 1880 and died Nov 22, 1918. He was born one mile south of Linnsburg where he grew to manhood and spent the greater part of his life. He was one of a family of 8 children, six of whom are living, his sister, Katie having died several years ago; his father died two years ago. While engaged in work at Indianapolis over a year ago, he contracted lead poisoning and after a severe illness, he regained his health to the extent that he was able to tend his mother's farm the past season. His health again failed and while mind and senses were alert, the motor nerves were unable to perform their functions. In order to obtain skilled treatment he was taken to a hospital at Indianapolis. All was done for him that could be done, but to no avail. His illness was of several weeks' duration - long, trying hours at the hospital. How his face would light up at the visit of relatives or friends, how eagerly the letters were read, and through it all such an intense longing for home. He bore his suffering bravely and patiently, and through this suffering came a great spiritual light, a light which guided him through a peaceful death. He was of a kind jovial disposition and many a sad heart has been enlivened by his ready wit. He will be sadly missed in the home and neighborhood. The funeral was held from St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Crawfordsville Monday morning, Nov 25 after which he was laid to rest in Calvary cemetery.
