Maxwell - John C - Sp Ame War

SOURCE:  South Bend News-Times St. Joseph County Indiana 7 May 1915 p 12

Crawfordsville, Ind May 7 – When the body of John C. Maxwell of this city, Spanish-American war veteran, was lowered into the grave at the masonic Cemetery yesterday, the bugle that sounded taps for Maxwell was the same instrument and was blown by the same bugler who sounded the call for the charge at the battle of Sud Lon, in the Philippines, in which Maxwell was engaged. CC McClure was the bugler.  Following the battle, the captain of the company presented McClure with the trumpet. At that battle, Maxwell suffered exposure, causing a bronchial affection (sic – infection) that eventually resulted in his death.  Maxwell was partly deaf and was for years a mail carrier in this city. He is survived by the widow and one child.   --- kz
