Lafayette, Ind Aug 25 – Ex_Gov. Claude Matthews was stricken with paralysis this afternoon while addressing the Old Settler’s Society at Meharry’s Grove, 16 miles south of this city. He was in the middle of his address, when he sank to the platform unconscious. He was taken to the residence of Isaac Meharry, physicians were summoned and an examination developed that his entire right side was paralyzed. The stroke was due to the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. Mr. Matthews is unable to speak and is conscious only at intervals. The gravest fears are entertained for his life. His wife and son have been summoned from Indianapolis. Word from Meharry’s Grove at a late hour tonight gives scan encouragement to the ex-Governor’s friends
