Funeral services for Leonard Daniel Mapes, age 81, of the West Liberty community, who died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Westbrook Nursing Home in Crawfordsville, were held at 2 p. m. Friday, March 1, at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home. The Rev. Alfred Dobbs officiated. Burial was in Atherton Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Hershel Mapes, Max Everett, Malcomb Twigg, Harold Mapes, Scotty McBride and Larry Ellis. Mr. Mapes was born March 4, 1881, in St. Joseph, Ill., he was the son of Thomas and Samarath McElwee Mapes. He was married Feb. 24, 1904, to Lura Bell Langford, who preceded him in death on May 21, 1961. Mr. Mapes had been a farmer all of his life. He was a member of the West Lebanon Church of Christ and a 50-year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Danville. He had resided in Ohio from 1913 to 1929 and then moved to West Lebanon where he remained until 1939. At that time, he moved to the West Liberty community where he resided until entering the nursing home on May 10, 1961. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Maudie Twigg of Danville and Mrs. Carrie Schefke of Covington Rt. 1; a son, Walter Mapes of Columbus; two brothers, Harvey of Crawfordsville and Earl of Newtown; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth White of Danville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
