Mrs. Emma (Wright) Lucas, a native of Tippecanoe County who died Sept 13 in Dallas, Texas is said to have been the first woman to have undergone a Caesarian operation.  Mrs. Lucas, 86 years old at the time of her death was born May 3, 1846 near Clarks Hill. She was the wife of Luther Lucas who died several years ago and is buried in Salem Cemetery near here. Since his death she had been living with a son, Garfield Lucas at Dallas where she died. She died while seated in a chair reading a Sunday School paper. Burial was made at Dallas.  It was while the family three miles of Stockwell that Mrs. Lucas underwent the Caesarian operation.  Dr. Moses Baker of Stockwell was called. With the life of the mother and yet unborn child both nearly despaired of, Dr. Baker performed an operation delivering the baby.  Both mother and child thrived, the former living until she was 86 and the latter being the son at whose home she died.  - kbz

Funeral services were held Wednesday in a Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Tex with interment in a cemetery there for Mrs. Luther Lucas, former resident of Tippecanoe County who died Tuesday at the home of a son, Garfield Lucas in Dallas. It was first planned to bring the body here for burial. - kbz
