Capt. J. H. Lindley, formerly of Rockville, but more recently of Indianapolis, died Saturday evening at the Denison Hotel after a short attack of the grip. He was well known in Crawfordsville and served through the war in the 11th Indiana Calvary. Although 50 years old, he had been a bachelor until four years ago.

Capt. John Lindley, well known in this city died at the Denison house in Indianapolis last Sunday. Monday’s sentinel contained the following in regards to his death and a brief history of his life: John H. Lindley, after a brief illness of pneumonia, died at the Denison House yesterday afternoon at 2:20 yesterday afternoon . Deceased had been a resident of Indianapolis for about three years past, having returned to this his old home after a long residence in Parke County and Terre Haute. He was well known throughout this portion of the state among bank institutions, etc having for several years been a large investor of capital and having many interests in his control. When a mere boy he went from here to Rockville where he entered school and continued until he had finished a thorough course of study. At the conclusion of his scholastic career he entered the office of his uncle, Washington Hadley, the then treasurer of Parke County. The Rebellion came on and young Lindley then a strippling, enlisted in the 43rd Indiana Infantry and marched away with his regiment which became a factor in the Army of the Cumberland. Through the entire war he served with undiminished fidelity and signal bravery. From a private in the ranks he passed through all the gradations of promotion until he had attained his captaincy. At the close of the war Capt. Lindley returned to Rockville and settled down to peaceful pursuits. He was universally popular through Parke County and served the county as treasurer four different times. --- transcribed by kbz
