Charles W. LINDLEY, 94 the father of Mrs. Lucile RUSK died at his home in Bloomingdale on Wednesday May 14. he was the son of Aaron and Julia Ann Lindley. He enlisted in the Union Army at age 16 and was one of the two surviving veterans in Parke Co. He was commander of Steel Post GAR. He served as county surveyor. In 1872 he married Miriam TOWELL who survives him with 3 sons; Richard of San Bernardina Calif; George of Alexandria; John of Elwood; and two daughters, Mrs. Rusk and Mrs. Marianna Greist of Chicago. He was a member of the Friends Church. - typed by kbz

Elwood - Charles W. Lindley, 94, father of Dr. JH Lindley, local dentist, 1607 South J Street, died at his home at Bloomingdale at 9 o’clock this morning. Surviving are the widow, Miriam, 92, three sons, Bertram of San Bernardino, Cal; Dr. George Lindley of Alexandria, and the Elwood dentist; three daughters, Mrs. EE Griest, of Chicago; Mrs. Lucile Rush (Rusk) of Waveland Mrs. Hamlin Shute of Indianapolis and one granddaughter.

C.W. LINDLEY, Penn Township's sole survivor of the Civil War, informs us that 70 years ago, Tuesday April 9, General Lee surrendered to Gen. Grant at Appamatox Court House, Va about 70 miles SE of Richmond. At the time of Lee's surrender, Mr. Lindley says that his company was on guard at Winchester, Va some 100 miles from the place; that Lee in a fine new uniform handed his sword to Grant who was at the time attired in plain clothes.
