Stephen D. Lewis was born June 8, 1837 near Pleasant Hill, now Wingate, Montgomery Co Indiana. In 1861 he enlisted in the Civil War in Co G 10th Ind Vol Inf and served until 1863, when he was honorably discharged July 18, 1863, he was united in marriage to Amelia A. Oliver and to this union were born 9 children, six of whom survive, 3 dying in infancy. Those who survive are Charles W of Crawfordsville; Ira of Monticello; Mrs. Clara Rex of Joliet, Ill; Mrs. Josie Smith of White Heath; Benton H of Champaign, Ill and James W. Lewis of Monticello. His first wife died Oct 14, 1884. August 8, 1885 he was united in marriage to Rachel F. Harvey and to this union were born two children, Wm. H of Bloomington Ill and Mrs. Edith Myers of Monticello. His second wife died in March 1890. In Sept 1892 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Emma Donaldson. No children were born to this union. The wife, 8 children, 5 step children, 22 grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive also a host of friends here and in Indiana, his old home. He also leaves a half brother and number of nieces and nephews. He joined church when young and had all his life been an ardent church worker.
