(Waveland News item) -- John S. LEWIS was born in this place Feb 14, 1863 and died of consumption Nov. 17, 1885 at 10- minutes past four o'clock. He had been confined to his bed about 9 weeks and was reduced to a mere skeleton when death came to his relief. He was the newly appointed postmaster but was never inside the office since the removal of the office the first of Oct. Before his marriage to Miss Mary KELSO, he was a clerk in Hanna & Johnson's store. After his marriage, he opened out a tobacco and cigar store in the north room of the old post office building, then afterwards moving across the street in the little room north of Glover's. He was the youngest child of Noyer and Samantha Lewis. He was quite a favorite among the young men with whom he associated. A young wife and little boy, Herbert, he leaves to follow on after awhile. His father had charge of his business during his sickness. The funeral was conducted at his father's residence, at which place he died. Rev. JH Sammis offic. in the obsequies. The interm. was made at the Presbyt. Church Cemetery by the side of his brother, who died about 18 years ago. The funeral was largely attended by our town people. The parents and near relatives of the deceased have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. - typed by kbz
