Newton Lee, 72-years old, a resident of Montgomery County all of his life, died at his home a mile and a half west of here Sunday morning at 6:30 after an extended illness with heart trouble and hardening of the arteries. Mr. Lee was born Feb 20, 1844 near Smartsburg, a son of Daniel and Charlotte Lee. He was the last survivor of a family of 11 children. Mr. Lee was married to Rhoda Wisehart near here on March 7, 1867. No children were born to them. Mrs. Lee survives her husband. Mr. Lee was a member of the famous Montgomery County dum corps that gained much notice during the Fremont-Buchanan campaign 60 years ago. The corps was called the "Buck and Breck Corps." Mr. Lee is believe to have been the last living member of the group. Mr. Lee was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years. He had been prominent as a member of the IOOF Lodge here. Funeral services were held from the late home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. W.M. Nicely. Burial was made in the IOOF Cemetery.

Darlington Jan 30 – Newton Lee, age 73, a prominent Odd Felllow and Democrat, died near here Sunday. He was born in this county and was the last of a family of 11 children. Mr. Lee was a member of the famous Buck & Brec (Buchanan and Breckinridge) Drum Corps of 1856, in Montgomery County which also was known as the Sheepskin Band.
