Ft. Lt. William C. Leavenworth, age 27, son of Profession and Mrs. Clarence E. Leavenworth, 1000 S Grant Avenue was Killed in Action somewhere in eastern France October 29th. The telegram from the War Department notifying the family of his death was received Thursday. Lt. Leavenworth was a photo navigator on a reconnaissance plane and had been overseas since April 1944. It is thought he had been attached to General Hodges' American army in France. Born in Crawfordsville, Lt. Leavenworth attended schools here and completed his sophomore year in Wabash College before entering Hamilton College in NY where he was graduated. He took post grad work in botany both at the University of Maryland at University of Illinois. He was an instructor in Wabash College at the time he entered service. Lt. Leavenworth's father who is head of the Dept of Romance Languages in Wabash College is now in Mexico on a term's leave of absence where he had planned to do research work. He left jus this week. Lt. Leavenworth is survived by his parents, his wife, Mrs. Martha Leavenworth and a 14-month old son, William Burgess Leavenworth. His wife and son have been making their residence here with his parents while he was in the service.
