Curwen Leaming, 74, retired farmer and seed salesman, died at 3:40 a.m. Monday in Home Hospital at Lafayette. He had entered the hospital Saturday after being injured in a fall at his residence in Romney. Born May 31, 1894, in Romney, Mr. Leaming was the son of George C. and Alice Stewart Leaming. He married Ruth Riston Dec. 9, 1916, at Romney. She died in September of 1965. Mr. Leaming was a member of the Romney United Methodist Church and chairman of its board of trustees. The deceased also belonged to the American Popcorn Association and the American Seed Trade Association and was director of the Red Cross, Cancer Society and Heart Association. He was active in the Farm Bureau and Farmers Insitute. Mr. Leaming was a pst master of the Romney Masonic Lodge; a past patron of the Order of Eastern Star, and belonged to the Scottish Rite and Indianapolis. Mr. Leaming served on the board of directors of the Home Hospital in Lafayette from 1932 to 1961 and was president of the board from 1957 to 1961. He was made an honorary life member of the board in 1961. Mr. Leaming was vice president of Health, Inc., at Lafayette, and was a member of the board of trustees of Wesley Manor in Frankfort and its president from 1957 to 1959. He was a director of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company from 1932 to 1941 and treasurer of the company from 1941 to 1954. Mr. Leaming ws a winner of a Lafayette newspaper's "George Award" in 1965. The award is given by the publication for outstanding service to the community. Mr. Leaming attended Purdue University and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Alvin E. Morehouse of West Lafayette; one son, Marion C. Leaming of Palm Beach Shore, Fla.; one granddaughter, and four grandsons. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Services will be conducted Wedneday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. at the Romney United Methodist Church. Rev. Joe Wick and Rev. Jack Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery at Romney. Friends may call at the Leaming residence from 3 until 10 p.m. Tuesday. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour preceding the funeral Wednesday. The Helms Funeral Home is in charge of the services.
Funeral services for Curwen Leaming were conducted Wednesday at Romney United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Wick and Rev. Jack Williams officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery at Romney. Serving as pallbearers and assisting with flowers were Ammon Swope, Stewart Kellerman, James Davis, Frank Simek, William Cook and George Ross. Organ selections were played by Mrs. Dale Sabens.
