Layne - Elvira Mortimer

To honor the memory of Mrs. Elvira Mortimer LAYNE, daughter of Famous Mortimer, Revolutionary soldier and a DAR "Real Daughter," two of the 12 grandchildren of Mrs. Layne presented the following article to the newspaper for publication. Elvira L. Mortimer was born in Fleming Co KY July 22, 1832 and died Aug 24, 1907 having spent most of her lifetime in Brown Township, near New Market. She was the daughter of Famous Mortimer and Mary Blue Mortimer. She became the wife of William A. Layne, Aug 11, 1850. They were the parents of 11 children: Mary E; Nancy J; Preston M; Joseph A; Elisha F; Harry F; Margaret; Fannie; William C; Samuel M; and Laura J. Her father, Famous Mortimer, was born in Loudon Co VA 1763 the son of Famous and Isabella Sebastian Mortimer. His marriage to Mary Blue occurred Oct 13, 1816 in Fleming Co KY. His military service was as private in Col. Armand's Legion following his enlistment Sept 1, 1781 to his discharge Dec 1783. He was one of a company who guarded prisoners of war. He died in Fleming Co Ky April 10, 1850. Mrs. Layne became a member of Dorothy Q Chapter, DAR at Crawfordsville November 7, 1905; she was admitted as a "Real Daughter," which term applies to daughters of Revolutionary soldiers who became members of DAR chapters. On Sunday July 3, 1927 Dorothy Q Chapter unveiled an official DAR bronze marker at her grave in old Indian Creek Cemetery commonly known as Old Hickory Cemetery which bore the DAR Insignia and legend, Real Daughter, in memory of Elvira Mortimer Layne." Previously in 1925 the above chapter had placed a similar marker on the grave of Mrs. Lucinda Hardee McMullen, which marker was the first on of its kind in Indiana. Surviving grandchildren of Mrs. Layne are: Lon Layne and Leard Layne, New Market; Vela Swank, Crawfordsville, Artie VanHorn and Marie Ward, Danville, Ind; Fannie Bunnell, New RIchmond; William Layne, Greencastle, Stella Bunnell, Indianpaolis; Marcus Layne, Modesta, California; Earl Layne, Benton Harbor, Michigan; Emanuel Layne, Salem Ore and Iola Farnsworth of Idaho.
