Capt. Wilson H. Laymon died this morning about 2 o’clock at his home on east College street. The arrangements for the funeral have not been perfected as yet and the announcement will appear later. Wilson H. Laymon was born in Butler County, Ohio in 1823.  His father, Joseph Laymon, removed to Crawfordsville during the youth of Wilson and died here in 1856.  Wilson after requiring an academic education, attended Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar at Columbus in 1845.  He at once came to Lawrenceburg, Ind and formed a law partnership with a Mr. Layne, a Democratic member of Congress. Removing to Hamilton, O, two years later he engaged in the practice of law and was elected to several county offices, serving one term as Auditor, publishing the Miami Democrat in addition to his official duties. In 1852 he went to Cincinnati and became editor of the daily Citizen.  Soon after assuming the position he resigned it to come to Crawfordsville and assist his father who was in failing health. He entered the wholesale and retail grocery business with his father and continued the business after his father’s death until 1859.  In 1862 Mr. Laymon enlisted in Company F, 86th Ind Vols and was repeatedly promoted for gallant services until in 184 when he obtained the captaincy of the company. He fought in 28 battles and was in some notable engagements. He fell wounded at the battle of Stone River and the whole rebel army passed over his apparently lifeless body. In 1865 Crawfordsville was incorporated as a city and at a citizen’s meeting Capt. Laymon was unanimously chosen Mayor, in which capacity he served two terms and was then appointed assistant assessor of the 8th Internal Revenue District and held the place until the office was abolished. He was then elected Mayor again, but soon resigned to engage in the restaurant business. In 1845 Capt. Laymon was married to Sarah A. Cooch of Hamilton, Ohio who shared his fortunes until her death which occurred four years ago January 1.  Of the three children born to them Emma and William are dead and James T. is engaged in business in the city. Capt. Laymon was a Republican in politics since 1860, when he forever left the Democratic party. He was a loyal and generous citizen and his death removed an honest, upright man and one who is mourned by all.
