Darlington – Nathan J. Lane, 88, retired pharmacist and a former director and past president of the Farmers & Merchants Bank at Darlington died in Indianapolis Friday night. A resident of Darlington for 5- years Lane was the owner and operator of a pharmacy before his retirement. In addition to his wide activity in civic affairs, he was prominenet in fraternal organizations. He was a 50-year member of the Darlington Masonic Lodge, a past patron of the local Order of Eastern Star Chapter, a past grand chancellor of the Indiana Knights of Pythias and a supreme officer of that order’s national organization. He was a member of the East Christian Church. Lane received his primary education in Lawrence County where he was born and was a graduate of the Purdue School of Pharmacy at the turn of the century. Prior to his arrival in Darlington he had been a resident of Liberty, Connersville, Columbus and Campbellsburg. He was born April 2, 1879, the son of Benjamin and Callie Thomas Lane. He was married to Birda Mabel Evans on Oct 11, 1904 in Campbellsburg, Ind. His wife preceded him in death on Sept 28, 1965. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Arthur T. Sims and four grandsons, T. Lane Sims, Daniel A. Sims, R. Mack Sims and William M. Sims of Indianapolis; a brother, Mack Lane of Bedford and five great grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Services ill be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bright Funeral Home at Darlington with Rev. Willard H. Eckroth officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at Darlington.
