Effie Walkup, daughter of Benjamin and Jane Conner Walkup, was born Sept. 15, 1869, and died June 5, 1917. She was born near New Ross and with the exception of a very few years had lived here all her life. She was married to Daniel W. Lane March 8, 1892, who, with three children, Mrs. Lelia Dooley of Crawfordsville and Henry W. and Elizabeth, at the family home survive. She was admitted to the M. E. Church in 1907 under the pastorate of Rev. Oakel F. Hall. She was the youngest of a family of six. Those surviving are Ward B. and Rankin C. of Crawfordsville and Miss Mary E. Walkup of New Ross. It would be difficult to form words that would express what the loss of this grand woman means to the family, the M.E. Church and the community in which she has lived. To her the title of wife and mother had the highest and holiest significance and many motherless girls and boys will revere her memory for words of advice and deeds of kindness. She was ever ready to uphold the cause of Christianity, temperance and morality. To her it meant more to be a home keeper than a mere housekeeper. She was a woman of much natural ability, a reader of the best literature and it is reflected in her children and all the young people with whom she came in contact. Truly she was a queen mother and ruled her children with the scepter of love and tenderness. The funeral was held at the M. E. church in New Ross June 7 and was conducted by Rev. G. E. Francis of Brazil. The burial was at Mace Knights of Pythias. - kbz
