Lane - (Mrs. Thomas - 1873

On last Thursday night, while Mrs. Thomas Lane, near Judson, Parke County, was filling a coal oil lamp on the stove hearth with sun light oil, the draft of the stove drew the gas from the oil into the stove, which immediately caught like powder, communicated with the can in her hands, and exploded at once, throwing the fire in all directions. Her own clothing took fire and that of her daughter, a little girl of 10 or 12 years of age, both of whom were badly burned. The child died the same night from the effects of the terrible burning, and at last accounts it was thought the mother could not live.
