Frances Layne, widow of Jacob Layne, and who, since his demise has continued to reside on Sect 3, Adams Twp, where, with her children, she has been actively engaged in the cultivation and improvement is a native of Montgomery County, Indiana and was born Dec 22, 1828. Mrs. Layne is the daughter of Daniel and Nancy DETHERAGE EASLEY, natives of NC; both now deceased. Mrs. Frances Layne was married to Jacob Layne July 9, 1849 and the following year came to Iowa and purchased 160 acres of land in Adams Twp this county, located upon it. Their union was blest by the birth of 5 children: Elizabeth, deceased; Daniel, deceased; Sophronia wife of H. Hepler and living in Adair Co Iowa; Sarah J, wife of Phillip Ross, a successful farmer of Polk Twp, and Ira, who lives with his mother and is engaged in the cultivation of a farm. Jacob Layne was a native of Ky, a farmer by occupation and was killed by a runaway team May 15, 1878. Our subject is at present owner of 40 acres of good farm land, with substantial improvements upon it. She is a laborer in the cause of the Master, and holds fellowship in the Christian Church and is respected and honored for her many good deeds and loving disposition; as well as comforting words and generous heart.
