Source: Weekly Argus News, March 18, 1893

W.J. Krug, sheriff of Montgomery County, Crawfordsville, was born June 3, 1814 in York, Pennsylvania and is the son of William A. and Elizabeth (Jones) Krug. His father was born in Lancaster, Sept 17, 1790 and his mother in York, Pennsylvania. The latter died in 1855, but the former still lives in Montgomery County at a very advanced age. Mr. Krugg, Sr is a saddler and harness maker by trade. He was early a whig but later a republican. He emigrated to Ohio in 1821 and to Montgomery COunty in February 1838 and settled in Coal Creek Township where he bought a section of land. They had a family of 10 children. Mr. and Mrs. Krug were Episcoplaians. His father came from Germany and his mother's people from England. William J, son of the above, spent part of his youth on the farm and part in the saddlery and harness shop, beginning the latter trade when 14 or 15 years old. For some time he solicited subscriptions for tombstones, as agent for Lewis & White of Indianapolis and was very successful in the undertaking. In 1876 he was elected by the republicans, sheriff, by 177 majority over William Lee, a very strong candidate and in 1878 reelected by a majority of over 700 votes while the county was about 300 democratic. Mr. Krug is now tired of political life and will retire soon to his farm. During the late waar Mr. Krug served about 11 months under Capt. Lily, as senior saddleman in the 18th Ind. Bat. Mr. Krug was married April 13, 1834 to Kezia, daughter of Robert McCain of Butler County, Ohio. They have had 10 children, two dead and 8 living. He is a Mason, a Good Templar, and a Son of Temperance. His father was a strong churchman and a man of strict integrity whose word was as good as his bond.
The above is taken from the history as published a few years ago.

William Krug who died at 3:30 yesterday of heart and liver trouble has been well known in this city ever since he came here to take possession of the office of sheriff. He was a big, jolly dispositioned man and easily made friend with all whom he met. He was sociable and plain in his address and thoroughly democratic in his way of living. After leaving the jail where he resided during his term of official life he moved to a residence on Plum Street where he lived until his demise. One remarkable fact connected with his death is that although 79 years old himself, his father, Wm. A. Krug survives him and will be if he lives, 103 on the 17th of September next. This is the first death in his family.

Wm J. Krug died yesterday afternoon about four o’clock at his residence on South Plum Street. The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at two o’clock conducted by Dr. H. A. Tucker. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.

W. J. Krug, who was the son of the venerable Wm A. Krug, was born in York, Penn., June 3, 1814. William J. came with his parents to this county in 1838 and settled in Coal Creek Township. He was one of 19 children. He served during the war as senior saddle man in the 18th Indiana Battery. He was married in 1834 to Kezia McCain, of Butler County, Ohio, and ten children were born to them.
In 1876 Mr. Krug as a Republican was elected sheriff of the county by 177 majority and re-elected in 1878 by a majority of over 700. He was a farmer much of his life, but for the past few years resided in Crawfordsville. He was a Mason and a Good Templar and was quite prominent in both orders. Mr. Krug has been in failing health for a long time and his death was not unexpected. Still the new is received with great regret as the deceased was a man of many admirable and worthy traits of character. He was a friend to all and an enemy to none and his demise will be sincerely mourned.
