Kritz - Henry Seymour

Professor Kritz passed away very peacefully at six o'clock on Monday evening. The shock of the accidental fall 3 weeks before was too much for his enfeebled condition. Examination after death showed that the hip bone was broken near the joint. Funeral services were held at the home of FW Kritz at half past two on Wed. afternoon, conducted by Rev. FB Solin, assisted by Pres. Mackintosh of Wabash College. Interment in the Presbyterian Cemetery.

The following obituary was read: "Henry Seymour Kritz was born near Madison, Jefferson Co, IN on Feb 14, 1825. He passed to his final rest at his home in Waveland, IN on Feb 22, 1915, aged 90 years and 8 days. He was married on April 5, 1854 to Mary A. BRUSH. To this union were born 14 children, 3 of whom d. in infancy. The mother passed away on April 25, 1899. Mr. Kritz received his early education in the common schools of his native County and in a seminary at Madison, IN. While there he was apprenticed to a paper manufacturer and learned this trade. While working at this trade in Indianapolis in 1845, his right hand was caught in the machinery and was so disabled as to disqualify him for working longer at this employment. Finding a change of occupation necessary, he decided upon the career of teacher. In preparation for this profession he entered Hanover College in 1847 and worked his way through college by tutoring the preparatory classes.

In 1852, in conjunction with Prof. COYNER, he took charge of the Presbyterian Academy at Waveland (Which afterwards became the Waveland Collegiate Institute). This position Prof. Kritz held for more than 20 years. In 1876, he was made superintendent of the city schools at Crawfordsville, and in 1877 he became associated with Prof. Bassett in the preparatory department of Wabash College. In 1881, he was made principal of this department which position he held until the year 1896, at which time he retired to private life at his old home at Waveland. Prof. Kritz was one man among many. No inflated phrases are necessary to set forth his excellent characteristics. He, being dead, yet speaketh.

His life was an open page to be read by any passerby. As a teacher, he endeavored to be faithful, not only to the minds of the students, but also to the souls of men. As a citizen, he was always interested in the public welfare, and ever stood for the highest good for the community in matters political, moral and religious. As a Christian, he ever tried to be true to his God, his church and the better leadings of his own heart. Uniting with the Presbyterian Church in early manhood, he was for many years the Sup't of the Sabbath School at the Waveland Church and a helpful member of the session, and as long as health permitted, was an earnest, active and devoted laborer in the Lord's vineyard. As a father, his Christian example and influence were such as to create and sustain in the hearts of his children a feeling of reverence and esteem which can never die. And low, in this great sorrow, at the loss of their parent (though for only a little while), they find great comfort in his sublime faith and trust in Christ, his Savior, and his perfect assurance of eternal blessedness in the life hid with Christ in God. His constant expectation was to look upon his Lord, for he realized that "now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face," and his great wish was to be with Him, for his last testimony was "I desire to be with Christ which is far better."

Among those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: Judge and Mrs. DT McIntyre of Mattoon, Ill; Mrs. RV hunter of Buffalo NY; Mr. & Mrs.TE Groninger of Indianapolis; Mrs. SL VanPatten of Anderson; Bertha Schweitzer of Terre Haute; Mrs. William Oakes of Kokomo; Mrs. Frank Scott of Crawfordsville; President Mackintosh and Profs. Osborn, Kingery and Haines of Wabash College.
