Kostanzer - Eugene

Source: Crawfordsville Review, December 19, 1891

The whole city was shocked last Saturday morning when the announcement was heralded that Eugene Kostanzer had died at his home on south Washington street.  He was not known to be seriously ill, not even by the family.  On the Tuesday preceding his death he severely strained himself by hanging some heavy chairs in the store.  The next morning he was unable to rise the gradually grew worse until Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, when he gently passed away into the arms of his Maker, so suddenly that the family were scarcely aware of it until it was over.  Eugene Kostanzer was born in Crawfordsville in July, 1860, and was accordingly 31 years of age, being the eldest son of Anthony Kostanzer.  From early boyhood he displayed rare business qualifications and has for years been at the head of the time honored firm, at Kostanzer & Sons.  He was always noted for his great force of character, yet gentle and kind and splendid habits.  His death is a severe shock to an already afflicted family and a large circle of friends, among whom he was a great favorite.  The funeral services were conducted from the family home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon.  Rev's E.B. Thompson and R.S. Inglis officiating. = thanks so much to Kim H for all her wonderful obits she sends our way :)

The whole city was startled this morning when it was announced that Eugene Kostanzer had died at his home on South Washington Street about 10 o’clock. It was not known that he was seriously ill and not until yesterday afternoon did his family feel any serious alarm. The direct cause of his death, so far as could be ascertained, was peritonitis. It seems that Mr. Kostanzer was working on some racks at the store on Monday, and severely strained himself, causing the fatal disease to set in. From almost the first, he stated that he believed he would never get up, but such a thing seemed impossible to the family. He suffered greatly last night and died with a raging fever. The funeral will occur from the residence on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Revs. E. B. Thomson and R. S. Inglis officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill.  Eugene Kostanzer was born July, 1860, and was accordingly 31 years of age. He was raised in this city and has always been noted by his sober, industrious habits, his strict integrity and thorough business principles. He was one of the city’s most enterprising young merchants and a general favorite in social circles. The family is utterly prostrated by grief, and has the sympathy of the entire community in this awful bereavement. -s
