Kirtley - William Raymond

Dr. William Raymond Kirtley, not only one of the leading dentists of Crawfordsville, but also one of the most prominent leaders among the younger business generation of this city, died at his home, 1101 West Wabash Avenue late last night at 11:40 o'clock from pneumonia. The death terminanted a short illness, starting two weeks ago with influenza and developing into pneumonia last Monday. Dr. Kirtley was born at Franklin, Indiana, July 21, 1884, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Samuel and Clara E. Kirtley, in Johnson County, Indiana. He was raised to manhood in Franklin and graduated from Franklin HS. He then entered the Indiana Dental College at Indianapolis and graduated from the institution in 1906. He came to Crawfordsville in 1907 and began the practice of dentistry, building up a leading patronage through his honest dealings with the general public. On October 6, 1908, he married Miss Laura S. Miller, daughter of Charles Miller of this city.
He was a staunch church worker, being a member of the Christian Church here. He was formerly assistant superintendent of the Christian Church Sunday School and at the time of his death he was deacon of the church. He was also a leading Mason of this city, being a 32nd degree member and Shriner of that order. He was one of the men who have built up the YMCA in this city and at the time of his death was one of the directors of the association. He was also VP of the Ben Hur Dental Society which is a division of the alumni organization of the Indiana Dental college.
He is regarded by all business men of this city who transacted business with him as a man who had unusually hoest traits of character and he was among the leaders of the younger business men of Crawfordsville. He is survived by his wife, two children, James Marion and William Raymond, at home; mother, Mrs. Clara E. Kirtley, Franklin, Ind; two brothers, Frank S. Kirtley, Indianapolis, Ind and Dr. LW Kirtley, Lebanon, Ind, and two sisters, Mrs. Elsie L. Musselman, Franklin, Ind and Mrs. Jesse S. Smith, Detroit, Mich.
No funeral arrangements have as yet been made and will pend the arrival of the immediate relatives.
