Mrs. Laurel S. Miller Kirtley, 83, of 1207 W. Main Street a former city clerk-treasurer and long-time active in community affairs died at 10:35 a.m. Monday at Culver Hospital. She had been ill and hospitalized for about a month. She was the mother of two prominent physicians, Dr. J. Marion Kirtly of Crawfordsville and Dr. WR Kirtley of Indianpaolis. Both sons survive. Mrs. Kirtley was born Feb 7 1887 near Smartsburg, the daughter of Charles M. and Mamie Wisehart Miller. She was married in October of 1909 to Dr. W.R. Kirtley, a dentist. He preceded her in death Oct 19, 1918. She served two terms as city clerk-treasurer and deputy city-clerk treasurer under Mrs. Mabel Himes. Mrs. Kirtley was a member of the Crawfordsville First Christian Church and a former superintendent of the church's Sunday Shcool. Active in community organizations, Mrs. Kirtley was twice president of the area's Business & Professional Women's club, member of Athens Chapter 97, OES and Travel Study Club. She was also a member of Dorothy Q Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Kirtley was a receptionist for Dr. Byron Lingeman for many years. In addition to the sons, survivors include 5 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Beth Gremelspacher of Terre Haute and a brother, Charles Raymond Miller of Indianapolis. Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m Thursday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Howard F. Miller and Rev. Paul Million officiating. Interment will bein Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may cpay respects at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Wednesday. - kbz
