Kirkpatrick, Ind., Dec. 5, 1898—The funeral of James W. Kirkpatrick was one of the largest ever held here. It was held on Sunday, Dec. 4, conducted by Rev. T. C. Shanklin and concluded by Elder Clearwater at Stockwell Cemetery. The pallbearers were selected from his most intimate business friends of his own age and were Hon. Silas Peterson, Rev. Wm S. Bryant, Simeon Bryant, Alexander Campbell, Wm Rick, Milton Morin, Edward Coleman and James W. Wilson. He seemed aware of the end from the beginning of his sickness and made a division of his personal property.

James Wesley Kirkpatrick died at his home in Kirkpatrick Thursday evening, Dec. 1, 1898. The funeral occurred Sunday at 10 o’clock a.m. at the home. Burial was immediately after at what is known as the Wildcat Cemetery (*Stockwell Cemetery).
Mr. Kirkpatrick had lived many years in this county, coming here from Tippecanoe County and buying what was known as the Jake Shobe farm of 160 acres. He immediately began the improvement of it and added to it until at his death he owned perhaps the finest farm in the county consisting of some 900 acres. He laid out and almost entirely built the town of Kirkpatrick. Some three months ago he gave to each of his three children a fine farm of 200 acres, and had now just completed the renting of his entire farm to Joshua Saidla and was arranging to take life easy. His sickness was of short duration and his life was a busy one up almost to the day of his death.  - kbz

The death of James W. Kirkpatrick occurred at 5 o’clock Thursday at this home in Kirkpatrick, pneumonia being the cause. He was 71 years of age and was born in Pickaway county, O., coming to Indiana when a boy. He had a great farm and was the founder of the village of Kirkpatrick, contributing the money which built the Methodist church there. A widow and three children survive, viz: Mrs. William Dicks, of Cincinnati; Frank Kirkpatrick, residing in Lauramie township, and William P. Kirkpatrick, residing at Mayview, Ill., and a sister, Mrs. E. J. Clark, residing in Kansas, also survive. The deceased was an uncle of W. Bent Wilson and a cousin of Dr. G. W. Kirkpatrick, of this city. He was a man of energy and integrity, as may be seen in the handsome estate of which he possessed. Some time ago he divided a portion of his property among his children, but still retained a handsome estate. The farm on which he lived was one of the most productive in Montgomery county and was always under a high state of cultivation. He took great interest in the raising of stock and on his farm were many of the best animals that are bred. The funeral was conducted on Sunday morning at 10 o’clock.
