Ketcham - Andrew

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal 27 April 1854 p 2

Died at his residence in this place on Saturday the 22d inst, Andrew Ketcham, a colored man for many years a resident of Crawfordsville.  Andy, as he was familiarly called was a kind-hearted man and possessed many good traits of character but unfortunately was too fond of his dram and dram shop.  The coil of the treacherous tempter was around him, which gradually grew stronger and stronger, became tighter and tighter, until all physical and vital powers were crushed and the poor man closed his eyes in death.  Often have we urged him to shun the dram shop as his deadliest enemy but his habits were too strong he yielded to their power and at last yielded up h is life.  How much better man, husband and father would he have been had liquor been kept from him?  And how long will it be ere we shall have to record that another victim has been offered on this bloody altar? - kbz
