Kelsey - Martha McConnell

Mrs. Martha McConnell Kelsey, who has resided in Crawfordsville since 1826, died on Friday morning in that city. She was born in Hamilton, Ohio Jan 25, 1809 and was married to Joel Kelsey Oct 30, 1828. He died April 20, 1849.

Mrs. Martha Kelsey died on June 1 at 5 o’clock at the home of her niece, Mrs. WW Seawright, after an illness of only 10 days, at the extreme age of 79 years., The maiden name of the deceased was Martha McConnell. She was born in Hamilton, Ohio Jan 23, 1809 and removed to Indiana in 1826 thus becoming one of its earliest pioneers. She was married to Joel Kelsey Oct 30, 1828 and was left a widow April 20, 1849.  Two children were born to them, Israel who died in 1874 and John M who still survives. She has been a member of the Presbyterian Church for a number of years and was an honest, zealous and consistent Christian. She has been living with her niece, Mrs. Seawright for the past 8 years. The deceased was a sister of JN McConnell, Mrs. Lucinda Lynn, Mrs. IH Benefield of this city and Mrs., George W Snyder of Jamestown, The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock from the residence on East Wabash Avenue. Interment at Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. Lucinda Lynn and Mrs. Martha Kelsey, sisters who are among the early pioneers of Crawfordsville are both quite ill.
