James S. KELLY, who for many years was prominently identified with the business life of Crawfordsville passed away at his home, 200 W. College, early Saturday morning following an extended illness. Mr. Kelly´s death occurred at 2:45 and was caused by the infirmities of age. He had been seriously ill for 3 months. James S. Kelly was born Sept 9, 1850, in Brooklyn, NY the son of Patrick & Mary Kelly, Irish immigrants. At the age of 7 he was left an orphan and was taken to an orphans´ home in NY. In Oct 1859 he was brought with other orphans to Montgomery County and was placed on a farm east of the city where he remained until Oct 1863. Deciding that he wanted to be a drummer by, he made his way to Evansville. Failing to get into the service, he remained in Evansville until 1872 when he returned to Montgomery Co. On March 7, 1878, he was married to Sue S. Campbell of Harrison Co OH and stayed in Ohio two years. He then returned to the east of the city. In Feb 1882, he moved to Crawfordsville and has been a resident of the city ever since. Mrs. Kelly passed away in Feb 1929. Mr. Kelly served six years in the shoe trade, 22 years in the grocery trade and 15 in the insurance and building & loan. In 1925 his health failed and he had to give up active business. He was purchasing agent for Culver Hospital in its early years on the board of directors of the Montgomery Union Savings associations, also the POS of A was member of the official board of the 1wt ME Church and served as treas a number of years. The funeral services will be held at the 1st Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 2 with Dr. John S. Ward, pastor of the church preaching the funeral sermon. Burial will be made at Oak Hill Cemetery. T he body will be taken to the church at 1:oo o'clock and will lie in state until the hour of the service.
