On Saturday, August 22, at Knox, Starke County, Indiana, occurred the death of Dr. W. M. Kelley. He was born near Ladoga, April 15, 1840, the son of William and Nancy Kelley. He enlisted at the outbreak of the war in the 11th Indiana, under Col. Lew Wallace. At the expiration of his enlistment he joined the 2nd Indiana Cavalry, and upon expiration of this enlistment joined the 7th Indiana Cavalry, serving until the close of the war. He received two wounds in his left leg and made a record for his bravery. After the war he took up the profession of medicine and won eminence in the practice in the northern part of the State On the 28th day of June he was injured in his left leg by a runaway team which necessitated the amputation of that member. He was surviving the amputation nicely when dysentery seized him and caused his death. His demise is sincerely mourned by the residents of Knox and Starke county. - transcribed by Kim H
