Nicholas B. KEEN, who has been suffering for several months with dropsy, died at his home southwest of town on Sunday morning. The funeral services were held at ten on Wednesday morning. Mr. Keen was nearly 71 years old.

Nicholas B. Keen was born near Berksville, Cumberland County, KY Aug 20, 1843. He departed this life on Sunday, March 29, 1914 aged 70 years 7 months 9 days. He was the son of Samson and Eliza Keen, the first child of a family of 3. He was left an orphan when quite young and spent his early life with an uncle. He united with the Methodist Church at an early age. At age 22 he came to Indiana where he spent the remainder of his life. About 1876 he attached himself to the Lutheran Church of which he remained a steadfast member until his death. He enlisted in the Union Army Sept 28, 1861. He was a member of Co F, 5th KY Cavalry and served 3 years 7 months and 7 days. He served as Sergeant of Scouts under Kilpatrick in Sherman's march to the sea. He was honorably discharged May 3, 1865 for expiration of term of enlistment. Those living to mourn his death are a bereaved wife and 8 children, 3 girls, 5 boys. Four of the children are by a former marriage. besides these, there are two sisters and a number of other near relatives and friends. A wife and four children preceded him in death. The last to depart this life was a daughter, Altha who passed away a few years ago, the death of whom left an unhealing wound in a dear old father's heart. His daily life showed his fine Christian Character, always a smile and a kind word for all with whom he came in contact. He numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was a fond, loving, affectionate husband and father. Father is gone and our home will never be as it once was. - kbz
