The shocking news of the sudden death of one of North Liberty’s most prominent young ladies in both social and church circles was spread Monday. Miss Nellie Johnson went to Chicago during the holidays to visit among friends, and on her way home stopped to spend New Year’s with her sister, near LaPorte, where she was taken suddenly with pneumonia. Many of Mrs. Johnson’s friends were unaware of her illness and the news came as a great shock to them.
Nellie was born in Whitestown, Boone County, Ind., September 3, 1872, and died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Carrie Heald, north of LaPorte, Ind., Jan. 10, 1898, aged 25 years, 3 months and seven days. She was the youngest of ten children born of the marriage of Rev. E. R. Johnson and Christiana Cameron. She leaves four brothers and four sisters, who with her father and stepmother mourn her loss to them.
In the year 1882, she united with the M. E. Church at Pleasant Hill, Ind., at the age of ten years and became a useful member. Nellie leaves a large circle of friends who will sadly miss her.
Her character bore the unmistakable stamp of noble womanhood. Her untimely death has terminated a career which is remarkable for its unselfish devotion to family and friends. By her death the community has lost a useful member, the Christian faith, an unassuming yet powerful exponent, and the home a bright and dutiful daughter.
Funeral services were conducted in Lamb’s Chapel on Rolling Prairie Charge at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, by Rev. Isaac Dale, Presiding Elder of the South Bend district, assisted by Rev. William Davis and Rev. R. S. Simmons. A number of beautiful floral offerings were placed upon her casket—one of the most beautiful being a pillow of carnations and immortelles, which was brought by brother, Charles, of Crawfordsville, who with his four sisters were present on this sad occasion. The attendance was very large, as Nellie had many friends.

Many of the people of Vermillion County have a distinct remembrance of Rev. E.R. Johnson, who some years ago, served a term as pastor of Summit Grove charge, M.E. Church, and who is now pastor at North Liberty, in the northern part of the state. Nellie was his daughter and the youngest of a family of 10 children. She was born in Whitestown, September 3, 1872. She was baptized when an infant at Lebanon, IN, by Rev. E.W. Lawhon, the present pastor at Newport. She united with the church at the age of 9, when her father was pastor at Pleasant Hill (now Wingate). She lived a Christian life of rare beauty, noted especially for devotion to the good of others. Her care for the comfort of her father, now somewhat advanced in years, was very notable. Her mother died when Nellie was quite young, but the good woman who came to take the mother's place was so true and faithful, that the child did not realize the loss --a compliment alike to the woman and child. During a visit at the home of a sister near the city of LaPorte, she was attacked with pneumonia and passed away very suddenly. Many of our readers of this paper have known Mr. Johnson and family well and favorably, and will deeply sympathize with the surviving members in this great loss, and especially with the parents who are rendered so lonely by the death of this dear daughter, the last to leave the home.
Miss Nellie Johnson, daughter of Rev. E. R. Johnson, died near LaPorte on Monday, Jan. 10, of pneumonia, aged about 25 years. She was ill but a few days. She was well known throughout this county, her father having been stationed on the most important circuits.
