Johnson - Anna Steele

Mrs. Charles H. Johnson died at her home on E. Green St on Monday afternoon. Her death followed a few days illness with peritonitis. Funeral services at the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday afternoon were conducted by Rev. FB Solin. Interment in Maple Ridge Cemetery.  Anna Belle Steele was the daughter of Dr. AT Steele and Mrs. Sarah Brush Steele. She was born on June 2, 1861 at the home on South Cross St, where ET Milligan's residence now stands. She married Charles H. Johnson April 25, 1883. To them were born two daughters, Mrs. Campbell Carpenter and Mrs. Warren Reddish, both of Niagra Falls, NY. These with the husband survive. She also leaves two sisters: Mrs. Hattie Vansickle, of Indianapolis and Mrs. Ella Miller of Chicago. Mrs. Johnson spent her entire life in this community. In every relation she fully met the test: a dutiful daughter, a faithful wife, a loving mother, a helpful neighbor, a true friend and a lifelong earnest and efficient Christian. her death at the meridian of life brings a sense of loss to every member of this community. The funeral was large attended and the floral offerings were many and beautiful. The high school and business houses generally were closed during the funeral hour. Among those in attendance from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs.  F.B. Johnson; Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson and daughter, Esther, Mr. and Mrs.  A.E. Eastlack; Mr. and Mrs. Fount Eastlack of Crawfordsville; Eugene Johnson of Piqua, O; Mrs Will Johnson and daughter, Miss Gladys of Wavelay, KS; Dr & Mrs TB Johnson and daughter, Mary Virginia of Jamestown; Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Vansickle and A. Smith of Indianapolis; Mrs. Ella Miller of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Campbell Carpenter and Mr. and Mrs. Warren Reddish of Niagara Falls; Miss Helen Steele of New York NY; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schweitzer of Terre Haute. - transcribed by kbz
