A few days ago Mr. A. Joel and daughter, Fanny Joel, came in fron Denver, Col. where they had been visiting for a few months. Mr. Joel's health has been breaking very fast since the death of his beloved wife and son, Ephraim, both of which occurred in the last two years and it was plainly evident to his children that the end was not far off. On last Thursday he said that he felt badly and a physician was called. He gradually grew worse and on Monday morning he became unconscious and sank into a painless stupor from which he never rallied. He died Tuesday morning at the home of his son, J.A. Joel and the last flickering spark was watched as it passed away with heart breaking anguish by his two sons, Jacob and Joly and daughter, Fanny. The sad news was telegraphed to his two daughters, Mrs. Solomon at Denver and Mrs. Warren at Buffalo and all are on their way here. A. Joel was born in Germany nearly 84 years ago. When a mere child he accompanied his parents to Manchester, England. He came to America in 1831 and located in New York. After a few years he came west, was married and located in Lafayette. In 1838, he removed his family to Crawfordsville, where he resided until some 10 years ago when he, being altogether retired from business, removed to Buffalo, NY to spend his declining years. Thus he had lived in Indiana for nearly 50 years. He was a man of sterling honesty and had a cheery and winning manliness that made every one his friend. Here he raised his family and they were an honor to him and his noble wife. There was an unusual depth of affection in the family and the death of his wife and son sadly broke the health of the man over whom the last earthly rites will soon be read. The writer as a small boy rmemebers A. Joel as a kindly, pleasant voiced gentleman and in older years knew him as a friend whose respect and confidence he values most highly. A. Joel left to his children - now all grown men and women - a priceless legacy of honored good name, noble integrity and manly regard for the rights of others. There are many sincere mourners who will speak his name with reverance and low voices this day. Last sad rites - At 11:30 today brief funeral services were held over the remains of A. Joel at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Joel.

At 12:30 the remains were taken to the Big Four depot and at 1:12 left for Buffalo where burial will occur. The floral offerings were many and of most exquisite designs. Following were pall bearers: Henry Campbell, W.T. Brush; Dr. S.N. Taylor; David Lee; Abe Levison; E.C. Snyder and B.R. Russell. Those who attended the funeral from here are: Mr. J.A. Joel; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Joel and son; Mr. and Mrs. Warner and son of Monmouth, Ill; Miss Fannie Joel; Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Solomon; and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph of Denver did not attend the funeral here on account of lack of time. They went directly to Buffalo -- typed by Karen Z - contributed by Jerry T.

There was no little surprise and regret expressed upon the streets this morning when it was learned that Abraham Joel had died last night between twelve and one o'clock at the residence of his son, Joly A. Joel, on west Pike Street. It had been generally known that he had been ill with something like pneumonia for several days but all were unprepared for the announcement of his death. The funeral will occur at Buffalo whore the deceased resided for the last ten years of his life. The remains will be taken to Buffalo as soon as his daughters, the Mrs. Solomon, arrive from Denver. Mr. Joel was born in Germany 84 years ago but when quite young removed to Manchester, England, where he resided until 1831 when he arrived in New York City, where he remained until he engaged in business in Lafayette. In 1858 he removed to Crawfordsville and engaged in the clothing business. About ten years ago, having retired from business, he removed to Buffalo, N. Y., where he has since resided and where his wife died last June. Mr. Joel leaves six children to mourn his loss: Jacob and Joly Joel, of this city; Miss Fannie Joel, who was with him at the time of his death Mrs. Warner. of Monmouth, Ill. and the two Mrs. Solomon, of Denver, Colorado. Mr. Joel was prominently identified with the growth and prosperity of this city for many years and was always a public spirited and enterprising citizen. Ho was always strictly honest, charitable, aid courteous, in all respects a fine old gentleman, whose death only deplored by his immediate family but by all with who he came in contact. - kbz
