ROACHDALE -- Herbert R. Jeffries, 70, of Roachdale died Sunday in Hendricks County Hospital at Danville. He was a retired Putnam County farmer and high school teacher. Mr. Jeffries had taught social studies at Wingate and Rockville high schools. Before retiring in 1965, he returned to Roachdale, where he had taught earlier in his career, and taught for another 20 years. A 1927 graduate of Wabash College, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and had played varsity basketball for the college. He was a member of the Roachdale Christian Church where he served as an elder and trustee and taught an adult class there for many years. He was past master of Roachdale Masonic Lodge and a trustee of Franklin Township in Putnam County. Born May 17, 1905, he was a son of Walter and Nettie Hargan Jeffries. He was married to Helen Chastain on July 12, 1933. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Richard J. (Janet) Davidson of Terre Haute and Mrs. Richard A. (Patsy) Partridge of Keokuk, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Eugene (Treff) Hutchins of Roachdale; two granddaughters, Susan Davidson and Deborah Partridge; and two grandsons, Jeffrey Partridge and Steven Davidson. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Perkins Funeral Home with the Rev. Herbert J. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Roachdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. --waw
