Jarvis - Winfield Scott

Winfield Scott Jarvis, the last surviving veteran of the Civil War in Greene Township, died at his home west. of Town at three on Saturday morning. He had been in his usual health but was not feeling so well in the evening. He waked his wife with a request for water and is said to have remarked: "I'm going home, I'm going soon" and peacefully expired. Funeral services at the home were to have been on Monday afternoon, but were deferred until Tuesday morning on account of the roads being blocked. Rev. John Servies of the Alamo Christian Church had charge of the services. The pall bearers were Clovis, Raymond, Howard, Jesse, Fred and Henry Jarvis. Dr. Harting, Lowell Spencer, Fred Priebe and Charles Barr, members of the American Legion carried the flowers. Burial at Bethany cemetery, Marshall. - transcribed by kbz

Winfield Scott JARVIS, son of Nathan and Rachel Moore Jarvis was born on January 18, 1847, near Waveland. Departed this life on March 7, 1931 at the age of 84 years 1 month and 17 days. Mr. Jarvis spent most of his life in Greene Twp, Parke County. He was married to Martha E. SUTTON on March 6, 1873. One important fact that must be stated is "He was an Old Soldier," having enlisted for service as a Civil War Veteran under Capt. Wm. D. Mull, Co. B 115th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers on July 20, 1863, was honorably discharge Feb 25, 1864. During his service he was under charge of Uncle Jack Newgent, a famous Old Civil War Chaplain. In his early life, he became a member of the Waveland Christian Church. He was a good husband and a grand old father. He is survived by his wife and 10 children: Howard A; Jesse M; Fred L; May G; Minnie E. Jacks; Anna L. Watts; Henry W; Ben H; Laurra D.; Vlaley B. Delay; 3 brothers, James Jarvis of Waveland; Thornton Jarvis of Cayuga, Clark Jarvis of Indianapolis, 12 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. - transcribed by kbz
