Mary Virginia Switzer Jarvis was born at Eaton, Ohio Oct 10, 1840 and died at her home on W. Main St, Waveland Dec 12, aged 78 years, 2 months and 2 days. She was the eldest daughter of Nancy H. Dooley Switzer and Jonathan Switzer, one of a family of 7 children of which three survive: James Switzer of Denver, Col; Reuben Switzer of Des Moines, Iowa and Mrs. Elizabeth Rubssan who for the past two years has made her home with her. She attended the schools in Eaton, until, at the age of 9, her mother passed away. She then came to this state and made her home with her aunt, Mrs. Rachael Jarvis, on the farm now owned by Charles Lydick. She attended school at the Warrick schoolhouse nearby. She taught one year in the country schools when she was 16. At the age of 17, June 8, 1858 she married the late William Jarvis. They lived on a farm southwest of town until 1899 when they moved to the present home. To them was born one daughter, Mrs. James Edward OLDSHUE. Mr. Jarvis died March 19, 1916 and the daughter preceded her mother but a few months, dying March 9, 1918. She joined the Waveland Christian Church in 1890, and was a faithful and devoted member, always being present at its services whenever possible. For some years her health has not been good, and she failed rapidly in the last few months. She was of a gentle undemonstrative disposition with a great fund of kindness that endeared her to all with whom she came in contact, being generally known as "Aunt Virginia." Besides the brothers and sister before mentioned, there are left to mourn her loss the son-in-law, James Edward Oldshue, three granddaughters, Vivian and Virginia Oldshue and Mrs. Edward Hancock of Montezuma and many relatives and friends. Rev. JT Boyer conducted funeral services at the home on Sun. morning. Interment at Maple Ridge. Those from a distance were: Mrs. Joseph Switzer of Eaton, Oh; Mrs. Minnie Rainey of Crawfordsville; Mr. & Mrs. Carl Fletcher of Darlington and Mrs. Roy Deere and Miss Mary Dott Jarvis or Terre Haute. - transcribed by kbz
