ELLA SPENCER JARVIS

Source: Waveland Independent Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana Aug 8 1902

Blessed are they that die in the Lord for they shall rest from their labors and their works do follow them. Ella, eldest child of John and Jane Spencer was born in Parke County April 13, 1860 and died August 1, 1902 aged 42 years 3 months and 16 days. She married Clay Jarvis, Oct 1, 1879. To this union were born 3 daughters, Hazel, Cecile and Forest. She and her eldest daughter united with the Missionary Baptist Church 1897. Those present at the time of her immersion will ever remember the happy expression that came over her face as she came out of the water, clapping her hands and exclaiming, "Oh, I am so happy!" And during her sickness she was heard to say, "I think I will be just as happy when I die." Those around her during her weeks of suffering never heard a complaint or murmur escape her lips in regard to her condition. She was conscious until the last although she could not speak. She leaves a husband, 3 daughters, father, mother, a brother and two sisters to mourn the loss of one so dear - a devoted daughter, wife and mother. Funeral services were conducted by SK Fuson of Rockville Sunday Aug 3 at the home a mile north of town after which the body was laid at rest in the New Cemetery. - transcribed by - kbz

Source: = Pratt diary Sunday August 3 - I went to meeting at 11 o'clock, hooked "Bob" to the buggy and wanted Eva to go with me, but she excused herself by getting dinner and having it served on time so we could go to the funeral of Mrs. Clay Jarvis at 2 o'clock this afternoon. There was a large gathering of the neighbors. Rev. SK Fuson of Rockville preached the sermon. The corpse was put away in a beautiful casket. It was trimmed in white and caused the body to appear as if it had been put to bed. Visited Willie's grave after the meeting. Weeds are tall in the Cemetery. - transcribed by kbz
