Jonathan West James was born in Montgomery County, Ky., Feb. 13, 1823, and departed this life at his home in Parkersburg, March 22, 1900, being 77 years, 1 month and 9 days old. He was married to Lydia Freeman Nov. 7, 1855, and to this union was born one son, Benton E. James, of this place.
He leaves an aged wife, one son, one brother, one sister and a host of friends and relatives to mourn his departure. He was stricken with paralysis on his right side several years ago and partially recovered from this stroke being able to walk with the aid of a cane for about ten years. The second stroke came at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, and this he only survived a few hours.
J. W. James had resided in this community the greater portion of his life, and though not a member of any church, he was considered a good moral citizen, a kind husband and a good neighbor, being very jolly and full of jokes in his younger days. He was engaged in the mercantile business for over twenty years at this place and recently had charge of the post office for almost four years.
Funeral services were conducted at the home, and interment took place at the LaFollette Cemetery. “Uncle Daunty” as he was familiarly known in this community, will be sadly missed, especially by his aged companion to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy in this sad bereavement. - thanks to S for all the great typing :)
