Tragedy near home. Auto accidents have become so common that we scarcely glance at them, but sometimes, as a few days ago, they touch us more nearly as in the case of Dr. Morgan. [It is unknown how Dr. Morgan figures into this Obit- Jeff] On Friday afternoon tragedy came still nearer when William Jeffries was killed at the second culvert as you go north on the paved portion of the Terre Haute road. He was hauling gravel for the county from the Barcus pit near the Offield bridge, dumping it near the Indian Creek Cemetery. He was going back empty when the accident occurred. The cause will never be known as no one was near, but for some reason he ran into the east wall of the culvert and was thrown about 25 feet into the center of the road. The principal injury was to the head and death was probably instantaneous. One of the other drivers coming from the north with a load a short time after, did not see the body until so close that he was obliged to drive into the other wall to avoid running over it. His truck, however, was not damaged much. Owing to the fact that another of the Jeffries boys is very low with heart trouble at the home of his mother, Mrs. Lina Jeffries, east of Browns Valley, the body was taken to the home of Edgar Pitts. Funeral services were held at the Browns Valley Christian Church on Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. Harry K. Davis of Veedersburg. Burial is at Roachdale Cemetery. His mother, Mrs. Lina Jeffries, and four brothers survive him: Ralph, of Russellville, Homer, of Crawfordsville, and Lloyd and Clarence, of Browns Valley. He graduated from Waveland High School with the class of '27. The father died about three years ago. - typed by kbz
