The subject of this sketch was born Sept 2, 1855 in Putnam County, Indiana. When he was 7 his father died and for 10 years he lived with various relatives and friends. At the age of 17 he assumed charge of his mother, sister and a younger brother, and was their only support until the death of his sister in 1880........ Sept 7 1881 he married Miss Ida Gunkle, of Whitesville, by whom he had two beautiful and intelligent little boys. His mother and brother both died of consumption at his home in 1888. The same disease conquered him March 19, 1887. He is buried at the Ladoga Cemetery. No higher tribute can be paid to his memory than to say that in all his life we never heard one unkindly word or reproach spoken of him. He was a friend to everybody and the large concourse of friends at his funeral, despite the inclement weather, attested the worth and esteem in which he was held. Rev. J.F. Foster of the Universalist Church, conducted the service by request of the deceased -- LD - transcribed by kbz
