Hurt - Mary H.

Died May 24th, 1890, Mary H. Hurt, aged three years. Little Mary was sick nine weeks, and although suffering much pain during most of the time, she was kind, patient, and uncomplaining. She was conscious to the last and talked freely of the bright world to which she was hastening. A few minutes before she died, she sang in a clear, sweet voice, “Bye, Baby, Bye.” When the song was ended she rested a moment and then in distinct tones said, “I go, I go.” When we witness such a death we are reminded of Longfellow’s words: “Life is the gift of God, and is divine.” Each soul that is born is a frail vessel which must push its way to the port of rest and peace. When we launch a ship we know not if it will reach its port or not. And so with the soul. It may not reach its home. It may go down at sea, it may strike a rock, or the foe may seize it and make it his prize. Little Mary reached the port in safety. Suffering as she did, the vessel was unfit for the great sea of life and its severe storms. Therefore the Master caused it to hove to and put into the harbor of peace. This is the month of May. Singing birds, bright flowers, and glad sunshine. We enjoy all this and often cry out in our rapture, What a beautiful world. Father, mother, sister and brother, think of that world of beauty and grandeur, where Mary now lives. Clothed with life eternal she gathers flowers of every hue along the banks of the “River of Live,” hand in hand with Him who said: “Suffer little children to come unto Me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
