R. Grover Hungate, 87, of 807 E. Main St., chairman of the board of Ben Hur Life Association, died Thursday morning at his home. Mr. Hungate served the Association for more than 59 years. He began in 1912 and first served as state manager for Ohio. He became national field manager and moved to Crawfordsville. Subsequently Mr. Hungate became treasurer, then secretary of the Association. He served as Ben Hur's president from October, 1950 until June, 1958, and since then was chairman of its board. Active in church, fraternal and civic affairs, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church here and since the age of 21 a member of the Masonic Lodge at Sandborn. Mr. Hungate was a son of Marcus and Sarah Brooks Hungate and was born Nov. 9, 1884 at Sandborn, in Knox County. He was married at nearby Freelandville on Dec. 25, 1907 to Myrtle Stoelting. Mrs. Hungate died in June, 1969. Also deceased is a son, Harold. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert Harding of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Lillian Mastin of Willoughby, Ohio; a son, Robert, president of Ben Hur, and eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Hunt & Son Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Frank Little officiating. Interment will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.
