Hillsboro - Asa Humphreys, 79, former member of the Hillsboro Town Board and local merchant, died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday at his home here after a long illness, Mr. Humphreys had been in poor health for five years and bedfast for three years. He had owned and operated the Yountsville Service Station and Café for many years during the time the covered bridge was in operation at Sugar Creek. He sold the business in 1941 and moved to Hillsboro where he operated Humphreys' Hardware store until his retirement in 1960. The son of Samuel and Sarah Griffin Humphreys, he was born Feb. 1, 1891; in Vermillion County, Ill. His family moved to the Elmdale area while he was a boy and he was educated in area schools. He married Pearl Dazey of the Elmdale community Aug. 1, 1908. Mr. Humphreys was a member of the Waynetown F&AM 302. Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Ioline Raymond of West Newton, Mrs. Ruby Burditt of Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Virginia Lou Briney of Hillsboro; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Wilbur of Crawfordsville, Frank of California, Charles of Hillsboro, and Carl of Waveland; a sister, Mrs. Carrie Fruits of Crawfordsville. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, one sister and two infant sisters. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Servies-Thomas Funeral Home at Waynetown with Rev. Walter C. Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. - kbz
