Mr. Hughes was eighty years old and had lived in Danville for four years a prominent merchant of Crawfordsville and upon retiring came to Danville to make his home with his son, who is the sage carpenter at the Grand opera house. - Danville Democrat Paul Hughes was well known over this county, as he lived in the city the greater part of his life and was at one time one of the leading business men of this city and controlled considerable property. He owned the business block now the property of Jacob Joel, in which Diamondstone's clothing store and Ed Van Camp's shoe store are located. He also owned a farm a short distance northwest of this city. In the early days he owned a bakery and grocery store, which he conducted in the building owned on Main street. Later he was connected in other business ventures and for several years he was the privilege man with the Crawfordsville Agricultural association, an organization he helped to organize and in which he took a great deal of interest. In later years he met with business reverses and lost his property. He leaves besides the son Harry a daughter, Mrs. Thornton, who resides in California. The body was brought here this afternoon from Danville on the 1:05 train and was taken to Oak Hill cemetery, where short services were held at the grave before he was placed beside his wife, who died some years ago.
