Death of Mrs. Paul Hughes America J. Hughes, wife of Paul Hughes, died at her home on west Main street at 8 o'clock Wednesday, form a severe attack of the la grippe. The maiden name of Mrs. Hughes was Vanarsdall. She was the daughter of the late Cornelius Vanarsdall, and a sister of William Vanarsdall, of this city. The deceased was born May 7, 1829, in Mercer county, Kentucky, near Harrodsburg. In 1830 the family removed to Marion county, Indiana, near to the present site of Indianapolis. She was married to Paul Hughes May 4, 1852, she and her husband living happily together for 39 years. She had been a resident of this county for 40 years. The fruit of the union was two children, Mrs. Mattie C. Thornton, of Michigan City, and Harry Hughes, of Danville, Illinois. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Christian church and of the Order of Eastern Star. The funeral services were held at the late residence of the deceased Friday afternoon at 8 o'clock conducted by Rev. G.W. Switzer. The body was temporarily placed in the receiving vault of the Masonic cemetery, later to be interred at Oak Hill.

At half past 8 o’clock Wednesday Mrs. Paul Hughes passed away at her home on west Main street surrounded by the members of her family.  She was a victim of the grip which developed into lung trouble. The funeral was held at the house Friday afternoon at 2. Services by Rev. GW Switzer. The remains were placed in the vault at the Masonic Cemetery as Mr. Hughes is not able to be out yet.  America J. VanArsdal was born near Harrodsburg in Mercer County, Kentucky on May 7, 1829.  The family removed to Marion County, Indiana 1830 and short afterward to Montgomery County.  On the 4th of May 1852, America was married to Paul Hughes. Two children were born to them: Mattie who married AE Thornton and lived at Michigan City and Harry C. Hughes who lives at Danville, Ill. Mrs. Hughes was a kind mother, loving wife and good neighbor. All of her acquaintances were her friends and her death is a great loss to the community. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the members of which order did all in their power to make her last days as pleasant as possible.
