RICE VERNON HUNTER

Source: Waveland Independent, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana  10 March 1911

A telegram from Clifton Springs, New York telling of the death of Dr. Rice V. Hunter at that place on Saturday morning was a great shock to relatives and friends here.  He was known to be in poor health, but a letter written by Mrs. Hunter on Thursday said that he was better.  He was conscious almost to the last.  Death resulted from angina pectoris.

Dr. Hunter was born near Huntsille, Ohio, 59 years ago.  After graduating from Wooster College, he came here in 1877 with Professor Carson and took charge of the Waveland Academy.  He remained here 3 years; then spent two years in the Western Theological Seminar in Alleghany, PA.  Ater graduation he accepted the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church in Phio, Ill.  June 21, 1882, he married Miss Stella Kritz.  Sortly thereafter he was alled to the 7th STreet Church in Indianapolis. From there he went to Terre Haute, from whence after some years, he returned to 7th Street Church.  EIght years ago he was called to the Central Church in Buffalo NY.  He was very successful here and amalgamated this church with the Park Church.  The united congreations have just completed a fine church building of which he was to have been pastor, and which was to have been dedicated early in May. Over work in construction with the church building had much to do with undermining his heath.  Pending the completion of the new building he was given a vacation, aand under physicians advice went to Clifton Springs, but secured no lasting relief.

The funeral was held in Buffalo on Tuesday.  Mrs. G.M. owan; Mrs. Albert Kleiser and C.S. Kritz left here on Sunday to be present.  His wife and three children, Grace, Raymond and Lawrence survive.  Dr. Hunter was a man of ability, who made himself felt in whatever work he took part.  He was especially effective in extending the influence of the entral Church of Buffalo.  His many friends here will deeply regret his death in his prime of usefulness.  - typed by kbz
