Hiram Howland, who started the races here last week, died Wednesday night in Indianapolis. He was well known here. The Indianapolis Journal Thursday morning says of him:
“Hiram Howland died last evening at 8 o’clock at his home at Howland Station, after an illness of but twenty four hours. Death was due to gall stones in the bladder. Mr. Howland was taken ill Tuesday evening at the fair grounds and it was necessary for him to be taken home. He grew weaker until death relieved him of his suffering.
Mr. Howland was one of the prominent men of Marion County and a son of Charles Howland. He was forty six years of age and was born at Howland Station, where he lived throughout his life. For eight years he was a member of the state board of agriculture, and was at the time of his death general superintendent of the state fair grounds. He was also prominent in club life, being a member of the Columbia Club, Masons, Elks and K. of P. He was an aid on the governor’s staff, with the rank of major. He leaves a widow and five children.” - thanks muches to "S" for all her great obit work for this site
