Dr. Lloyd B. Howell, 83, of 9 1/2 Mills Place, retired professor of chemistry and formerly head of that department at Wabash College, died shortly after noon Friday in St. Vincent Hospital at Indianapolis, where he had been a patient since Sunday. He had been ill several weeks. Dr. Howell was a Crawfordsville High School and Wabash graduate and earned his master's and doctor's degrees at the University of Illinois. He taught and coached athletics at Remington, Ind., and Wauseon and Urbana in Ohio and also taught at Rice Institute before joining the faculty of his alma mater. He retired as head of the department in 1949 but continued teaching at Wabash until 1959. Last June at commencement exercises the college awarded Dr. Howell an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Born at Piqua, Ohio, on Aug. 29, 1887, he was a son of Gilbert L. and Louise A. Harthan Howell. He was married June 30, 1909 to Ione Todd at St. Mary's, Ohio. Their first home was at Remington. Dr. Howell was a member of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and taught Sunday School for 35 years. He was a member of Crawfordsville Lodge 50, F&AM, and Knights Templar Commandery 25, and had served as master of the lodge and as Knights Templar commander. He was an advisor to DeMolay and Rainbow Girls and was a member of the temple's board of directors of Masonic Cemetery. He was a member of the American Chemical Society. For some 40 years at Wabash Dr. Howell was a member and faculty advisor for Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity and received in 1958 the Order of Merit of the national fraternity, its highest honor. Mrs. Howell died Dec. 13, 1956. Surviving are a son, Gilbert T. of Richmond; three daughters, Mrs. Neil McKay of Ft. Wayne, Mrs. Frank Fickes of Newburgh and Mrs. Kathryn Harden of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Edith McClelland of Masonic Home at Franklin and Mrs. Walter Troemel of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Bright-Burkhart Funeral Home, with Rev. L. K. Wickett officiating and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday. Masonic rites will be conducted there at 8 p.m. Sunday.
