Susan Elizabeth Rice, daughter of Wallace and Rachel Stephens Rice was born May 31, 1880, one mile west of Mellott, Indiana and grew to womanhood in that vicinity. Early in life she entered the church and at present was a faithful member of the North CC Church of Mellott. She was married on December 11, 1881 to Alvy L. Howard of Mellott. To this union four children were born, one daughter dying in infancy and the husband in May 1927. She dearly loved to place quilts and raise flowers which she generously shared with others. She was a good mother, neighbor and friend and loved to share her home with all. She departed this life on August 12, 1944 at the age of 84 years 2 months and 12 days. She leaves to mourn her departure, one son, Elton, of Hillsboro, two daughters, Edith O. Palin of Phoenix, Arizona, and Muriel Rutledge, of Mellott; and many other friends and relatives, who lovingly called her Aunt Susie.
