NEWTOWN — Sgt. Samuel H. Howard, age 41, of Newtown, died Friday, Dec. 1, at the 249th General Hospital at Camp Drake, Japan, where he had been a medical patient three weeks. Death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. Born in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Dr. Chester W. and LaVera Shultz Howard. He graduated from Newtown High School in 1944. Sgt. Howard was married Dec. 27, 1949 to Gloria Gray, who survives. Other survivors include: one son, Gregg, and one daughter, Cheryl, both at home; his mother, Mrs. C. W. Howard of Newtown; one sister, Mrs. Kenneth Dooley of Lebanon; four brothers, William S. Howard of Newtown, Warren Howard of Lafayette, Max Howard of Washington, D.C., and John Howard of Kansas. Sgt. Howard entered the Army shortly after he graduated from high school and he had served in Greenland, Korea, France, Columbia and Ecuador, S.A. and Panama. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam while stationed in Panama and was sent there in August of this year. He contracted malaria and after being hospitalized in Vietnam, was transferred to Japan.  --typed by Walt W

NEWTOWN -- Sgt. Samuel H. Howard 41, of Newtown, died Friday in the 249th General Hospital at Camp Drake, Japan, of a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from malaria contracted in Vietnam. Sgt. Howard had been in Vietnam since August of this year. He was hospitalized there several weeks and was transferred to Japan two weeks ago, according to word received here. Sgt. Howard entered the Army shortly after graduating from Newtown High School in 1944. He had previously served in Greenland, Korea, France, Colombia, Ecuador and Panama. It was while he was serving in Panama he volunteered for Vietnam duty. A native of Crawfordsville, he was born Nov. 25, 1926, to Dr. Chester and LaVera (Shultz) Howard. He was married Dec. 27, 1949, to Gloria Gray of Newtown. Sgt. Howard attended Purdue University one year. Surviving are the widow, who resides in Mellott with her mother, Mrs. D. B. Gray; a son, Greg and a daughter, Cheryl at home; his mother of Newtown; a sister, Mrs. Kenneth Dooley of Lebanon and four brothers, William S. of Newtown, Warren of Lafayette, John of Haver, Kan., and Max of Washington, D.C. The body will be returned to Newtown, where funeral services will be conducted. Arrangements are incomplete at this time.  --typed by Walt W
